So this book was nothing like I was expecting. I joined a new book club in quarantine and this was the first book chosen by group vote. If you are looking for the standard lies etc between wife and husband or a kind of who done it, I would say this book has it, but in my opinion I wouldn't say this is the ideal book to choose.
Firstly, yes ok it is a kind of who done it and there are definitely secrets. For starters the wife is missing, no one knows what happened, did she have 'issues' or maybe was it foul play? Lets find out. But this story follows the wife... as a robot(!) with her real thoughts downloaded as she tries to figure out what happened to the real wife and what her new purpose is within the family, and society.
I was a little shocked with the AI concept of this book and I have to admit I was a little disappointed, not sure why! I enjoy books that are not necessarily the norm, and robots? Sure! Bring it on. I work in an IT office with our own office robot, she is super cool but not quite at the level as this robot wife! But I guess I just wasn't expecting this kind of story line and wanted it to be something else. However, once I got over this thought I did enjoy the book.
It cleverly switches between the robot wife and a mystery person. This definitely kept me interested, however I found I enjoyed the robot wife chapters more as I found them more interesting and engaging. That's not to say our mystery person didn't have anything interesting to share, but I guess I was not as intrigued with who this person was as I could have been and feel these chapters could have hinted to a lot more to peak interest.
Although I found the writing fairly simplistic, much like how I write as a non-author I suppose, I do think this is a great book suitable for maybe a holiday read where the reader isn't expected to give much in terms of emotion or time. There wasn't much depth in the writing which meant I got through it quite quickly. However I was definitely not expecting it to come to the conclusion that it did, so in that respect it was successful.
So I guess in conclusion it was an average read; the concept is nothing like I had read before which should always be a positive, however I was not as gripped as I could have been and would like to have been.
